Ashtanga Yoga classes in Brussels in the tradition of Shri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore (South India) and of Nancy Gilgoff of the House of Yoga and Zen (Maui, Hawaii)
Ashtanga yoga is a traditional form of yoga which was taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore (South India) and is still taught by Nancy Gilgoff at the House of Yoga and Zen on Maui (Hawaii). This highly dynamic system involves a synchronisation of breath, bandhas (energy locks) and drishti (gazing point). This produces a deep internal heat and a sweat which purifies the body while calming the mind. Through a regular (daily) practice of Ashtanga, the body becomes free from impurities, stronger and more flexible, while the mind becomes calm.
The traditional method of learning Ashtanga is the so called 'Mysore style class' which means that the students learn the postures one by one, without skipping postures or modifying the sequence. This is how this method is still taught in Mysore (South India) nowadays.
It is fundamental to respect the order of the sequence as every posture is a preparation for the next one . Only by respecting the traditional method, the students can reap all the benefits of this ancient practice.
