In 2000 a small group of aïkido students, among which Larbi El Akel, dojosho of the Rem Aïki Dojo, decided to create an aïkido seminar in order to give the possibility to SUGANO Sensei to come regularly to Belgium and teach (he was no longer invited at the summer seminars).
For the first seminar, we had chosen the weekend of 1-2-3 September, just before the start of the academic year, hence the name "Stage123W", "W" standing for Woluwe St Lambert, a Brussels commune, where the seminar is still being organised.
SUGANO Sensei was then the dedicated sensei for this seminar and he used to teach students coming from all over the world during these 3 days seminar. He did it continuously (except in 2005 due to hospitalisation). In 2010, the year he passed away, the seminar was held on his behalf by Louis Van Tieghem, Aziz Belhasanne and Larbi El Akel, close students of Sensei Sugano. Sadly, the news of his passing reached us in the night just after the seminar.
Considering the success of this seminar, the Rem and its organising team decided to contact YAMADA Sensei and explained to him the philosophy of this Stage123W. As a close friend of Sugano Sensei, YAMADA Sensei immediately accepted to come and teach every year during this international aïkido event, called now "Memorial Sugano Shihan". The first Memorial happened in October 2012.
Considering Yamada heavy schedule, the date changed. Seminars were organised in October 2013, then March 2014, but the name Stage123W was kept by the organising team to remind us of the open spirit in the promotion of aïkido shown by Sugano Shihan.
