An international Brussels-based non-profit committed to transforming the way we look at sustainable energy grid infrastructure.
Supergrid is an essential component of Europe's low-carbon future. It is a pan-European electricity backbone of massive capacity and extremely low transmission losses that offers three revolutionary advantages over today's transmission systems: first,it will allow large quantities of electricity to be carried from remote production sites, such as offshore wind farms, to users. Second, it will ensure Europe's security of supply by enabling the trading of electricity between member states, linking energy islands like the Baltic States to the rest of Europe. Finally, it will give European companies a key competitive edge in an energy technology whose strategic importance will grow with the effort to decarbonise the global economy.
Supergrid is based on innovative high voltage, direct current technology. The Friends of the Supergrid include companies all along the Supergrid supply chain, from those that will develop the technology and build the infrastructure to those that will own and operate it. Because every new technology presents development risks, the Friends of the Supergrid (FOSG) are helping Europe understand the challenges they face. The Friends offer the expertise needed to craft the policies and regulations to bring large-scale interconnections to Europe.
The Friends work closely with those who are building offshore generation and transmission systems. Thanks to the reach of their expertise, the Friends offer insights on all interconnection issues facing the policymakers that are developing Europe's energy policy through to 2050.
