CISM staat open voor de strijdkrachten van alle landen die officieel zijn erkend door de Verenigde Naties VN. Het fundamentele doel van CISM is het bevorderen van sportactiviteiten en lichamelijke opvoeding tussen strijdkrachten als middel om wereldvrede te bevorderen. Dit ideaal is samengevat in het CISA-motto "VRIENDSCHAP DOOR SPORT". CISM werd opgericht op 18 februari 1948 in Nice, Frankrijk. De vijf stichtende landen waren België, Denemarken, Frankrijk, Luxemburg en Nederland. Tegenwoordig bestaat CISM uit 140 lidstaten en organiseert het jaarlijks meer dan 20 Militaire Wereldkampioenschappen, op een totaal van 26 modaliteiten. De belangrijkste evenementen zijn de World Military Games, de Winter World Military Games en de World Cadet Games. Origineel The International Military Sports Council, known by its acronym "CISM", is an international sports association composed of the armed forces of member nations accepted by the General Assembly. CISM is open to the armed forces of all nations officially recognised by the United Nations UN. The fundamental aim of CISM is to promote sport activity and physical education between armed forces as a means to foster world peace. This ideal is encapsulated in the CISM motto "FRIENDSHIP THROUGH SPORT". CISM was founded on 18 February 1948 in Nice, France. The five founding nations were Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Nowadays, CISM is composed by 140 member countries, and annually organizes more than 20 Military World Championships, out of a total of 26 modalities. Its main events are the World Military Games, the Winter World Military Games and the World Cadet Games.
