The European Research Council (#ERC), set up by the EU, funds top researchers in Europe, of any nationality, to pursue their pioneering ideas at the frontiers of knowledge. The ERC executive agency was established by the European Commission
The ERC's mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, on the basis of scientific excellence.
The ERC complements other funding activities in Europe such as those of the national research funding agencies, and is a flagship component of Horizon 2020, the European Union's Research Framework Programme for 2014 to 2020.
ERC funding schemes are open to top researchers of any nationality or age who wish to carry out their frontier research in the 28 EU Member States or associated countries.
There are three core funding schemes: Starting Grants (up to €1.5M), Consolidator Grants (up to €2M) and Advanced Grants (up to €2.5M) and one additional scheme (Proof of Concept) for ERC grant holders who want to bring the results of their research closer to market.
