vulnerable girls in the developing world
Today we are witnessing the largest cohort of young people in the developing world undergoing the transition from childhood - to adolescence - to adulthood. How well they make these transitions will be determined in part by how well they receive the needed social, economic, and education supports at pivotal moments. Marked by both vulnerabilities and opportunities, adolescence is a critical period of human development that sets young people on trajectories that shape their futures as adults.
The goal of this initiative, which focuses on the 600 million “adolescent girls left behind”, is in the short and mid-term to mobilize effectively the European community in favour of adolescent girls in developing countries and, in the long term, to improve substantially their living conditions (health, education and rights). Improving the conditions of this target population will contribute decisively to achieving the MDGs in the poorest countries of the world.
