Social Spaces is an art and design research group of LUCA School of Arts (Campus C-mine).
Social Spaces developed a specific approach to art and design research. The aim of the group is to explore the social character of design, art and new media in our current society. At the same time, the group aims for highly qualitative research into the potential of old and new materials in creating different social interactions. This is made possible by its multidisciplinary team of designers, artists, computer engineers, social and cultural scientists, psychologists, philosophers, etc.
Engaging users as participants in the design process is key in the Social Spaces research projects. More specific, the group examines topics, such as interactions in public and semi-public spaces (like public squares, railway stations or health contexts) and social and sustainability issues. To research and shape these topics, a whole variety of alternative artistic and design methods are developed or redesigned.
Social Spaces is part of ‘Inter-Actions’, a research unit that bundles a series of research groups focusing on design and artistic research, evoking inter-actions between people, domains and disciplines, while exploring the possibilities of old and new materials, artefacts, media, spaces and events. By separating “inter” from “actions”, the unit stresses that its research wants to stimulate people “acting (actions) together (inter)” in cross-disciplinary or participatory set-ups.
