Health and Training Center for Horses
Equiatros is a health and training center for horses. Every horse is welcome, whether injured, recovering from injury, or healthy.
Often when a horse has been injured, stable rest is just what the doctor orders. Thereafter the horse must be introduced to work slowly and carefully. This is where things can go wrong, as the fully rested horse can be rather enthusiastic and risk re-injuring itself. The center is a calm and neutral environment where our horses are generally at ease. The treadmill offers the perfect solution to starting to walk again in a controlled manner, as the speed is constant. The swimming pool is a great way for a horse to use up all of its extra energy, without any weight or strain on the bones, joints, tendons or ligaments of the leg. Once the horses are accustomed to the concept of a moving ground (the treadmill) we introduce the aquatrainer. The aquatrainer also allows the horses to again walk at a constant speed, but through water. The cold water means that the muscles have to work harder in order to move the legs and at the same time it cools them.
We have 12 stables available. Horses staying at the center are exercised on the treadmill every day. Our standard programme involves swimming three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and walking in the Aquatrainer two times a week (Tuesday and Thursday). This programme can be adapted to the horses needs or the clients wishes.
The horses are fed concentrates and roughage three times a day. This can be adapted to the individuals needs or preference of the owner.
For horses that aren’t on box rest, there are 7 different sized fields available. Depending on the weather, horses can go out every day for a couple of hours. This can also be adapted to the individuals needs or the preference of the owner.
Not only injured horses are welcome at Equiatros. Many of our clients come on a weekly basis to use the facilities. This can be to train specific muscle groups or just for a change in their training programme. Advice can be given by our physiotherapist Jurgen Barczuk.
The center was started by physiotherapist and equine chiropractor (osteopaat) Jurgen Barczuk. Jurgen manages the training programme together with the individuals vet or owner. The care and training of the horses is then taken care of by Seona Liddell, qualified animal carer.
