BeMSA Gent ontstond als het 'SWISS' -Studenten Werkgroep Internationale Samenwerking en Stages-, een groep geneeskundestudenten van de Universiteit Gent, die zich met van alles en nog wat bezighoudt rond stages, derde wereld, global health en samenwerking met andere geneeskundefaculteiten.

Toen bleek er zoiets te bestaan als: IFMSA - voluit "International Federation of Medical Students’ Association"' - een onafhankelijke, niet-gouvernementele federatie van medische studenten-verenigingen uit de hele wereld.

Bijna alle Europese landen zijn lid van IFMSA, behalve…jawel…België. Daarom richtten geneeskundestudenten uit verschillende Belgische universiteiten nog niet zo lang geleden BeMSA op, de Belgian Medical Students’ Association. BeMSA is een koepelorganisatie voor Belgische geneeskundestudenten, met als belangrijkste doelen (1) alle Belgische geneeskundestudenten verenigen en (2) een actief lid zijn van het internationale IFMSA-netwerk.

En omdat het intussen allemaal wel wat ingewikkeld werd met al die letterwoorden, hebben wij als Gentse afdeling van BeMSA, besloten onszelf te herdopen tot BeMSA Gent. Aangename kennismaking!

ENGLISH VERSION

BeMSA Gent was up until last year known as SWISS, short for the Student Workgroup of International Internships and Cooperation. We’re a group of medical students at Ghent University with a special place in our hearts for international topics and adventures.

Belgium was one of the last countries in Europe that wasn’t a part of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations or IFMSA. Seeing this as a shame, a group of enthusiastic students from universities all over Belgium decided to get BeMSA started: the Belgian Medical Students’ Association was born!
 
Being very proud of this new organization and seeing that nobody from outside Ghent could understand that we as SWISS weren’t in any way connected to Switzerland, we decided to change our name in September 2011 from SWISS to BeMSA Gent.

It is our task to unite the medical students at Gent who have international aspirations and get them wherever they want in this world. 
We are very happy to be able to do this together with BeMSA and IFMSA.
