Geschiedenis Faith in the Academy - Theology Among the Disciplines Postgraduate Conference of the Society for the Study of Theology Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium – 28-30 August 2017 Conference Theme: According to Thomas Aquinas, theology deals with everything sub ratione Dei, everything in view of God. Through the centuries, theologians have developed a specific and sophisticated language that signifies the particularity of Christian practices and reflections. In the modern university, theology has become a discipline among many others, and like other disciplines, it sometimes suffers from insularity and overspecialization. Many theologians however engage with literature and methods from other academic fields, most notably philosophy, the social and the natural sciences, and in recent years increasingly also with political theory and economics. The main challenge then is to find a common ground for understanding across a diversity of expertise and approaches. Today, theology seems to have lost its dominant position in the European universities, and theologians often seek to collaborate with other academics in interdisciplinary projects. Apart from the challenges of interdisciplinarity, a younger generation of theologians is concerned about both the willingness of other academics to listen to theologians, and the intelligibility of the theological discourse in a secularizing culture. How does one bridge the gap between the academic disciplines? How can we bring theological insights into an interdisciplinary conversation? Call for Papers: The conference will offer a wide field to PhD-students and postdoctoral researchers to present a paper on either the conference theme or on their current research project.
